Opera Company Present Beethoven's Fidelio
Birmingham Opera Company present Beethoven's
Fidelio, sung in English in a new
orchestral version by Julian Grant and a new version of
the play by Sarah Woods. Graham Vick's production is
designed by Paul Brown and William Lacey conducts the
Birmingham Opera Company
Orchestra.
Fidelio will have
six performances in The Big Top, Aston Hall, Trinity
Road, Birmingham on 6th, 8th, 12th, 14th & 16th
March at 7.30pm with a matinee on 10th March at 3.30pm
(the performance on 16th March is to be broadcast live
by the BBC as part of the launch of the new digital
channel, BBC Four).

Graham Vick relaunched
Birmingham Opera Company with the intention of producing
high quality opera performances in unusual urban
environments and involving members of the local
community. This production of Fidelio
consolidates and builds upon the involvement of groups
of local people, many of whom participated in last
year's highly acclaimed production of
"Votzek".
For
Fidelio, more than 100 people from
Birmingham, drawn from such diverse sources as the
Gallery 37 Training Scheme, St Matthew's Church, Perry
Beeches, Fircroft College, the Young Rep and Sheldon
Heath Community School will work intensively with Graham
Vick. In addition to this group of performers more than
100 singers from all over the city will come together to
form the Fidelio Choir specially for this
event.

Fidelio will
play in the The Big Top at Aston Hall, Birmingham,
adjacent to Aston Villa football ground. The cast is
Jane Leslie MacKenzie (Leonore), Jonathan Best (Rocco),
Ronald Samm (Florestan), Keel Watson (Don Pizarro),
Donna Bateman (Marzelline), John Upperton (Jaquino) and
Michael Druiett (Don Fernando). Lighting design is by
Robert A Jones and the Movement Director is Ron
Howell.
